MANCHESTER - Monday night's women's hockey ended with a win for Vermont Country Store over Merchant's Bank, 3-2.

The game came to life during the first period when Merchants' Amy Bryan shot into goalie Tiffany Clark's net, but Clark successfully deflected Bryan's strike. However Merchants' Rebecca Allen got the rebound and netted for the first goal of the evening.

Minutes later there was a flurry of activity for the VCS women in front of net, keeping goalie Crystal Cleary busy diverting shots. Barbara Coleman sent the puck bouncing off of Cleary where Jessica Grabher picked it up and sent it to the back of the net to tie the game 1-1.

As the second period got under way, VCS's Kim Murphy strategically placed herself in front of the goal and with a precise pass from Grabher, Murphy got her first goal of the season. Merchant's Bank came back when Bryan picked up a loose puck at the red line, out skating VCS's impressive defensive line of Nancy Jean Henry and Barbara Price, scoring Merchant's second goal.

Another breakaway followed when VCS's turbo charged Grabher snatched the loose puck and delivered another goal unassisted.

The final score remained at 3-2 throughout the last period. Goalies Clark and Cleary's attention never wavered, shutting down the determined players.

Women's league play continues on Monday nights at Riley Rink at Hunter Park in Manchester and is open to all women.
