MANCHESTER - Shooting a 73 in the final round of the Vermont State Women's Golf Association Amateur Championship turned out to be just good enough to allow 17-year-old Madison Corley to walk away with the win last Thursday.

Corley had a total of 189, edging Rutland's Kristin Mahoney - who had the best round of the day on Thursday with a 72 - by a stroke at the tournament held at the Manchester Country Club.

Corley - who represented Links at Lang Farm - started the day two strokes ahead of Copley Country Club's Holly Reynolds and Mahoney with a total of 116 after 27 holes.

Competition remained close particularly through the first eight holes. All three women made par on the fourth hole - a 440 yard Par 5.

Corley got into a bit of trouble on the sixth hole - a Par 3. After driving her first shot into the bunker, Corley nearly chipped her second shot in only to see it roll down the embankment on the opposite side of the green. With Reynolds and Mahoney positioned relatively close to the pin, it appeared that Corley may lose a stroke. But instead she chipped the shot in to save par, pumping her fist after the ball found it's mark. Reynolds and Mahoney both made par on the hole as well.

Corley - who finished third last year when the tournament was at St. Johnsbury - lost a stroke on the eighth as a couple of putts just missed their mark causing her to bogey the hole. Reynolds and Mahoney both made par on the hole.

Reynolds - who was going for her eighth Women's Amateur title as the defending champion - finished four shots back at 193 after a 75 on Thursday.

The tournament was cut short because of weather, with golfers playing 27 hours on Wednesday and 18 on Thursday.

Seven women from local golf clubs also participated in the tournament. Jennifer Shaw of Manchester Country Club finished 27th with a 239 out of a field of 65 golfers. Barbara Price, also of Manchester Country Club, tied for 30th with Diane Macey of Stratton Mountain Country Club with a 243. Maggie Weaver of Manchester Country Club finished just one stroke behind Price and Macey for 31st place. Carol Miner - also of Manchester Country Club - finished 34th with a 251. Sarah Lee and Suzanne Neville - both of the Golf Club at Equinox - finished 38th and 40th with scores of 261 and 264, respectively.
