MANCHESTER - The Manchester District of the Green Mountain National Forest held their 23rd Annual Youth Fishing Day on Saturday, June 8, at Hapgood Pond Recreation Area in Peru.

Sixty-four kids up to 12-years-old registered to fish with older kids watching and helping. A total of 196 fish were caught and special prizes were awarded to those who caught the longest fish and the most fish in the following age groups. Award winners in the 0-5 age group were Evan Smilko (a 10 5/8 inch trout) and Isiah Goodwin (six trout); in the 6-9 age group, Carson Gordon (a 10 3/8 inch trout) and Maverick Heleba (six trout); and in the 10-12 age group, Mitchell Sausville (a 10 3/4 inch trout) and Damon Stone (six trout).

The Southwestern Vermont Chapter of Trout Unlimited helped make the event possible through their partnership and cooperation. Several other companies donated time, gifts, or cash. Donations were made by: The Orvis Company, the Gary Ameden family, the Norse House Ski and Sport, Andy Tarantino and A Safe Place Self Storage, Ben and Jerry's, the Manchester Lions Club, the American Museum of Fly Fishing, r.k. Miles Inc., and the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department. Many other individuals, organizations, and local businesses have generously donated over the years to help this annual event become a reality.
