A story in last week's Manchester Journal referred to conditions under which anterless deer and spikehorns may be hunted. To clarify, similar to rifle season, spike horns cannot be shot and killed. Spike horns are male deer with an antler set of only two spikes. However, hunters can purchase an anterless deer permit issued by the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department which allows them to shoot, kill, and tag an anterless deer. An anterless deer is defined as a deer without antlers or with antlers less than three inches long - which does not include spike horns. Some counties in Vermont are not open to anterless deer permits, however Bennington County and Rutland County are.
