Balance: start, move, finish

When you have a moment to watch golf on television, take a close look at the players' finish positions. Notice that they finish their swings in balance with their weight transferred to the outside of their front foot and their back foot up onto its toe. They remain in this balanced position for a few seconds. A good, balanced, finish is the result of a good swing — the body moving in the right sequence with the correct timing. Balance affects direction, distance and trajectory.

The next time you are out on the practice range hold your finish position to the count of three.  Can you maintain your balance? Is your back foot up onto its toe?

If you find yourself out of balance in your finish position, try tossing a ball underhand. Notice how your lower body shifts and rotates toward the target. This is similar to the body motion used in your golf swing. Many players begin their forward swing with their arms. Instead, let the strong muscles of your lower body lead your forward swing, arms and hands will follow. Start in balance. Move in balance. Finish in balance.
