BENNINGTON COUNTY — On Saturday, May 10, Bennington residents are asked to fill a bag with non-perishable groceries and leave it by their mailboxes.

The letter carriers will pick up the filled bags that Saturday and deliver them to local food shelves so these agencies can help hungry people.

The post offices in Bennington, North Bennington, Manchester Center, Shaftsbury, Arlington, Pownal and North Pownal will participate.

There are many hungry families in the Bennington area who rely on neighborhood food resources for help. Summer is a difficult time for many lower-income persons and their children because there are no school breakfasts or lunches, so these kids are counting on the community to provide nutritious food.

Non-perishable food items such as tuna fish, peanut butter, unsweetened cereal and juice, healthy soups, pasta, rice, beans, vegetables and fruits are needed. Cleaning supplies and paper goods are also welcome.
