PERU -- According to the Vermont State Police, shortly after 2:30 p.m., on Tuesday, Vermont State Police in Rockingham was called to investigate a motor vehicle crash involving a box truck that had driven off the roadway into a ditch.

An investigation into the crash revealed that the operator, Frank Salo, was driving a box truck for his employer, Black River Produce of N. Springfield, VT, east bound on VT Route 11. Salo stated he had dropped his water bottle a few times but was able to retrieve it until now. Salo advised he took his eyes off the road for a brief moment to reach for the water bottle again this time he was too close to the guard rails on the right side of the roadway. The tire lug nuts of the truck locked into the guard rail and as hard as Salo tried to steer away from the guard rail the truck followed the path of the guard rail subsequently driving the truck on top of the guard rails and then over the embankment into a cluster of trees. Salo was able to escape injury from this crash.

VT Route 11 was closed for a short time while the box truck was towed up and out of the embankment but not until the guard rail was cut and removed. Recovery of the truck took the collaboration from personnel of Londonderry Fire, Bennington County AOT and 2 heavy duty wreckers from Patriot Towing of Westminster, VT.

At this time the crash remains under investigation.
