Registration for the program, which is called Choose sNOw, is limited to 350 students, and costs $25. However, upon completion of the two classes, and after the student participates in their local "Green-Up Day," they will receive a 2014-2015 Mount Snow season pass.
All three events will be held at Mount Snow Resort. The first will take place on Wednesday, March 19, at 6 p.m., and must be attended by both the student and a parent or legal guardian, according to Mount Snow's website. It will feature guest speakers Kathi and Chris Sullivan.
Chris Sullivan was drafted by the New England Patriots in 1996, and went on to earn a Super Bowl Ring in 2001. However, three years after his retirement in 2002, he was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, possession of heroin with intent to distribute, illegal possession of a prescription drug, disorderly conduct, and driving to endanger. Today, Chris travels the country warning young people about the dangers of drugs and alcohol.
His wife Kathi's story is even more heartbreaking. After a night of binge drinking at a series of underage parties, her 17-year old daughter Taylor wandered alone into the woods and drowned in two feet of water.
The second event will be held on Tuesday, April 8, at 6 p.m., and needs only be attended by the student. This event will feature Patrick Grady, who, for over two decades, has inspired young people to do their best in all they attempt, through the use of the individual talents, abilities, and skills. He has taught thousands about goal setting, motivation, communications, believing in one's self, and creative leadership.
The third event will take place on Friday, April 25, and will be a make-up for these students who weren't able to attend the April 8 event. The presenter, Rob Williams, a Vermont-based media education consultant and public speaker. His presentation will focus on how the alcohol and tobacco industries use media to target youth with "pro-drinking messages, sex-drenched advertisements, and insidious branding campaigns."
All three events are sponsored by the Deerfield Valley Community Partnership, in collaboration with Mount Snow. Students who complete the program will have their passes mailed to them in the fall.
