There will be a monthly Hildene Survey on Dec. 8 or those interested may count birds during the 113th Christmas Bird Count on Saturday, Dec. 15. Monthly surveys of birds at Hildene: The Lincoln Family Home in Manchester began in February, 2008.
The specie total is 140 with the newest addition of a Common Nighthawk this past September. The walk will start at the Visitors Center at 8 a.m. and moves around the main house ending at the meadow and wetland off River Road. Hildene has been doing forest management and trail improvements along the wetlands. The brush piles are great hiding and foraging areas for the birds and other wildlife.
At the same time the views to the east have been opened to greater areas for observation. The Saturday walks are free and open to all who appreciate a morning observing nature.
The annual Christmas bird Bird Count will take place in the Winhall area on Saturday, Dec. 15. This is a day for participants to count birds from early morning to dusk covering many miles on a driving route, or to survey an hour or two in a small neighborhood area or to just check on the feeder activity from their home. Anyone can help. Details about the protocol, history, results and count areas can be found at Audubon's website:
The Winhall 15 mile diameter count circle is centered one mile south of the four corners on Winhall Hollow Road, north of Gale Meadows. The west border is Manchester Depot, north just south of Weston village; east at the edge of Windham village and south almost to Jamaica. It encompasses the villages of Peru, Landgrove, Londonderry, S. Londonderry, Bondville, and Rawsonville as well as Stratton, Bromley and Magic Ski areas. Many counters are needed to cover this circle. Particularly important are counts from people living within this area who are feeding the birds.
The bird data collected during all the bird surveys are entered in the international database, ebird. Contact Randy at the Vermont Bird Place & Skywatch or call 362-2270 for more information about any of these activities. Stewarts E. Dorset, Vermont USA.
