Ear Infections are the most common illness affecting babies and young children and the No. 1 reason for visits to the pediatrician. Almost two-thirds of all children will have had at least one ear infection by age 3. For many children, it can become a chronic problem, requiring treatment annually and puts the child at risk of permanent hearing damage, associated speech and developmental problems. Standard treatment for most ear infection cases is antibiotics.
Typically ear infections become a chronic problem and over time, repeated doses of antibiotics can lead to drug resistant bacteria that scoff at the drugs. If ear infections become frequent over time, "ear tubes" are then typically prescribed. The second most common reason for surgery in children under age 2 is for children with frequent ear infections. This surgery often requires general anesthesia, never a minor thing in a small child. More and more parents are considering chiropractic to help children with ear infections as a healthy alternative to medications and surgery.
