To the Editor:
At our upcoming Town Meetings there is an item on the ballots regarding funding for The Partnership. The Partnership is a public private initiative focused on Tourist Marketing and Economic Development – a Chamber on steroids, energized to accomplish the results this area needs in both marketing tourism and economic growth.
I've been associated with the ski industry in this area since 1970 and in all these years, I am sure I have never seen such a tough business situation as we have witnessed this winter.
The recently released report of the Governor's Commission on the economic health of Southern Vermont highlighted very clearly the need to focus energy and monies on improving the business of the southern 2 counties.
Our current Chamber of Commerce does not have the necessary income after paying occupancy and staffing costs to effectively market our area. We are getting out spent in the marketing business by all of our neighbors, New York, The Berkshires and The Lakes Region of New Hampshire.
It is critical that we invest the necessary funds to aggressively market Southern Vermont and to help our weakened economy.
This issue affects us all and that is one reason for a public and private initiative.
I urge all the voters to support The Partnership and to go one step further, get involved with The Chamber and the new Partnership.
