WOODFORD >> A hiker suffered minor injuries after he fell on the Long Trail on Wednesday.
Authorities received a report that a man had fallen while on the trail just after 7 p.m. on Wednesday, according to Bennington Rural Fire Department Assistant Chief Roger Hughs. Crews were called to the Long Trail trailhead parking lot on Route 9 in Woodford.
Hughs said the hiker was a man in his late 60s, whose wife expected him to be out of the forest by mid-afternoon. A concerned hiker went looking for the man when he did not emerge, and found him about five miles in. The concerned hiker attempted to help the man out of the woods, but the man wasn't able to walk the entire way. The concerned hiker then returned to the trailhead, where there was cell reception, and called authorities.
A crew of firefighters ascended the steep and rocky trail and found the man about half-a-mile in, Hughs said. A second crew went up and carried the man out of the woods with a Stokes basket
The man suffered minor injuries, including scratches, and was very "worn out," according to Hughs. He was taken to Southwestern Vermont Medical Center by the Bennington Rescue Squad.
