BENNINGTON >> Police responded to a crash Sunday that sent six people to the hospital.
According to a press release from Bennington Police, released Thursday, on July 3 at 12:35 p.m. they responded to a head-on collision on Route 9 about a mile east of Barney Road. Bennington Police Officers Thalia Hudson and Roscoe Harrington, the latter a crash reconstructionist, investigated.
Police said a 2014 Chevrolet Cruze being driven by Andrew Mathews, 26, of Groton, Conn., collided with a 2013 Toyota Prius, driven by George Schaeffer, 66, of Penn Yan, N.Y. Mathews was headed east with three passengers while Schaeffer was traveling west with one passenger.
Police did not say how the vehicles came to collide, and that the crash remains under investigation. Route 9 was shut down in both directions for a period of time.
All six people involved were transported to a hospital by ambulance. Bennington Rescue, Arlington Rescue, and Pownal Rescue responded. Schaeffer's passenger was airlifted to Albany Medical Center in Albany, N.Y. while three others were taken there via ambulance.
Bennington Rural Fire Department indicated on its Facebook page that it also responded and extracted at least one person from a vehicle. It posted photos of the crashed vehicles, each bearing heavy front-end damage. Bennington Rescue Squad posted on its Facebook page the following statement on July 4.
