BENNINGTON — A Bennington man is accused of driving while masturbating, and masturbating by the roadside in view of the public.
Paul Lambert, 53, pleaded not guilty Monday in Vermont Superior Court Criminal Division Bennington Unity to a felony count of lewd and lascivious conduct, and misdemeanor counts of giving false information to police, and careless or negligent vehicle operation. He was released without bail under conditions he not pick up new charges, keep the court notified of his address, and attend future court hearings.
According to an affidavit by Vermont State Trooper Lucas Hall, on May 27 at 2:05 a.m. a motorists called 911 to report a nude male standing off Route 9 in Woodford, masturbating. The caller contacted 911 again to say the male had passed them in a vehicle, still masturbating. Police were given a description of the male and the vehicle. The caller said the male was wearing a black wig.
The vehicle was pulled over in Bennington by Bennington Police and the driver identified as Lambert. He claimed to be out for a drive because he could not sleep and said he was never in Woodford. Police did not believe him, saying his car had gone past a trooper's cruiser in Woodford that was equipped with a license plate reader and that it detected him going by. Lambert changed his story and said he was urinating by the roadside, but not masurbating. Police said there was a black wig in his vehicle, and that he was wearing only a t-shirt and boxer briefs.
He later turned himself in at the Shaftsbury barracks upon police request where he admitted to masturbating by the roadside and to doing so while passing a tractor trailer on Route 9 heading west. He said this was a poor choice that put others in danger.
