SUNDERLAND >> State Police are investigating the cause of a tractor trailer crash where the driver died.
According to Trooper Justin Walker, on Sunday at 8:02 p.m. police were sent to the area north of the North Road underpass on Route 7 for a report of a tractor trailer off the road. Police found the truck 50 feet off the roadway. Passersby who had stopped told police the driver was inside, unconscious and not breathing.
Rescue personnel removed the driver and took them to Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington where they were pronounced dead. Walker said that based on tire marks at the scene, it was determined that the tractor trailer had drifted out of the southbound lane and into the tree line on the west side of the road, stopping when it hit a large tree.
The road was first shut down then routed into a single-lane while the tractor trailer was taken away. Arlington and Manchester fire departments responded to assist with traffic control.
Walker said there are no known witnesses to the crash itself and its cause is still under investigation. The name of the driver has not been released pending notification of their next-of-kin. Anyone with information is asked to contact Trooper Wayne Godfrey at 802-442-5421.
