MANCHESTER - Equinox Village has opened its space to local fitness instructors for several years. By adding a Chair Yoga class to its current offerings, the community now has four unique guided fitness experiences open to the public each week.

"We are very happy to open our community to members of the public who are looking for fun and interesting ways to stay active and improve their wellbeing," said Equinox Village's Vice President and Executive Director Kirt Sampson.

The instructors provide fitness instruction to residents free of charge, while members of the public are charged a normal class rate.

There are two classes presented by Cornerstone Fitness and created and led by Chris Uchida: a personal trainer, past professional dancer, and licensed physical therapy assistant.

GetMoving is from 9-10 a.m. on Tuesdays. This class is a dynamic, comprehensive fitness class for active seniors, especially those that may have conditions, injuries, or a lack of experience. This is a lively workout to reclaim and maintain vitality. Participants should wear sneakers and bring an exercise mat.

GetBalance is scheduled from 10-10:45 a.m. on Tuesdays. GetBalance features gentle and fun seated and standing rhythmic movement to increase balance and agility. Standing movements can be done supported or in a free-standing position.

The costs for GetMoving and GetBalance are $15 per class for the general public, $10 per class for Cornerstone Fitness Clinic members, and free for Equinox Village residents.

Rich Marantz of Green Mountain Tai Chi was among the first instructors to teach a class for the public at Equinox Village. His Tai Chi for Seniors class is at 10 a.m. each Thursday. About 10 students attend each class. The class leads interested seniors toward health and happiness using the methods and philosophies of Tai-chi chuan, Qigong and traditional Chinese external-qi healing. Residents and the public are now also invited to enjoy a Chair Yoga class at 2 p.m. every Friday. Instructor Ali Wassick completed her teacher training in 2006 at Yoga Vermont in Burlington. Wassick's teaching style is inspired by Ashtanga, Vinyasa Flow, Anusara, and Restorative Yoga. She hopes to teach her students to breathe, relax, and be present. "Staying active is vital for maintaining independence as we age. Being healthy and feeling good are added benefits. That's why offering a variety of fitness classes is so important here," said Ryan.
