MANCHESTER - The Northshire Bookstore has announce the formation of a Classic Mystery Reading Group. The first session is set for Friday, Aug. 9, from 2 - 3:30 p.m. in the bookstore Conference Room. The group will meet the second Friday of every other month. This group developed from the enthusiastic Mystery and Thriller Reading Group, which concentrates on contemporary novels. Members expressed an interest in tracing the development of the mystery/thriller novel from its origins to the present, which is the intent of the new group. We will select books by chronology or by theme: the first session will emphasize the earliest mystery writers, such as Edgar Allan Poe and Wilkie Collins (exact titles have not been chosen yet).

At other meetings, discussions will include themes, such as the origins of the private detective, early police procedurals, the development of the female detective, differences between American and international mystery writers, the earliest spy novels - and the influence of early writers, such as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, on the genre. The group will select themes and titles, depending on their interests and availability of the books. Two or three books will likely be read for each session, as the group will meet every other month.
