MANCHESTER - Starting June 17, the Southern Vermont Arts Center will again be offering its summer camps for children.

Campers ages 8-12 will bump, shake, wiggle and slide as they learn awesome hip-hop dance steps at Hip-Hop Camp with Maya Kraus from June 17-21. Hip-Hop Camp will highlight dance but will also touch on the history of hip-hop.

Campers will start with some basic figures and footwork and then move on to choreographed and freestyle dance routines. Parents and friends are welcome to come on the last day of camp for a short performance showcasing the dancers' talents.

Artist Bess Lewis will lead her very popular Art Camp from June 24-28.

Campers aged 6-9 will explore different cultures around the world in a variety of media such as Mexican clay animals, Japanese painted fans, Australian dot-painted didgeridoos, and more. Each day is a new adventure.

Kids will hike the Botany Trail and eat a picnic lunch nearby. In the afternoons they will get a chance to take their paints and pastels outdoors and look at the majestic views around them.

Drama-Play Camp with Cynthia Logan-Durbin will run from July 8-12. Campers ages 6-10 will play theater games, learn improvisation techniques, and explore Props and Costume. Students will gain exposure to literature, including Shakespeare, and gain confidence through physical and vocal warm-ups. A 10-minute presentation will be provided for family and friends on the last day of camp.

Ceramics Camp with Frannie Willard is a two-week fine art and design experience with a concentration in clay. During the first week (July 22-26) campers ages 7-11 will be working with wet clay and learning different hand-building methods. During the second week (July 29 - August 2) campers will also be instructed in still-life drawing, acrylic and watercolor painting, mixed media projects, and use their talents to decorate their final bisque-fired pieces. Campers have the option of signing up for one week.

Barbara Childs will lead campers ages 6-11 in a relaxed, fun-filled art adventure during Art and Nature Camp from August 5-9. Campers will explore different art themes through story, song, and games, and create objects of their choice out of natural materials. Each camper will also receive a forest sketchbook and colored pencils for sketching the plants, animals and insects observed during daily exploration.
