SOUTH SHAFTSBURY -- Lesley Lee Francis, Robert Frost’s granddaughter, will be the final speaker in this season’s "Sunday Afternoons with Robert Frost" series in the little Red Barn on the Stone House Museum grounds at 2 p.m. on Sept. 9. She is the eldest daughter of Lesley Frost, the eldest child of Robert and Elinor Frost.
The working title of her talk is "Education by Poetry," echoing the essay Frost wrote outlining his educational philosophy.
She will draw on her own memories of her grandfather (who died in 1963) and on her fulfilling journey as a Frost scholar. She is now working in her mother’s papers, many of which are housed at the University of New Hampshire.
The four Frost children were taught at home by their parents, first on their farm in Derry, New Hampshire, and later during their stay in England. Lesley Francis will focus on Frost’s belief that artistic creativity and original ideas were essential elements in the educational process and how he incorporated these principles into his interactions with his children, which, in turn, enriched his creative genius as a poet.
Lesley Lee Francis, who holds an AB from Radcliffe College, an MA from the University of Miami, and a Ph.D. in Romance Languages from Duke University, taught Spanish Language and Literature summers at the family school in Spain, and at colleges and universities in Virginia and Texas, before moving to Arlington, Va.,
She is Co-Honorary Trustee of the Robert Frost Farm in Derry, and on the Advisory Board of The Robert Frost Review (Robert Frost Society) and of the Robert Frost Stone House Museum.
The Friends of Robert Frost fund this series with the generous help of the Merchants Bank of Vermont. The programs are offered free of charge and reservations are not required. Both the Museum and the Little Red Barn are handicap accessible. For directions or more information, call the museum at 802-447-6200.
