DORSET - Global education has many avenues at Long Trail School. One program which is achieving success is the Spanish Immersion Program, which welcomes students from Spain and Andorra to the campus. Now in its third year, this fall program brings these European students into the classes, homes and lives of Long Trail families. While these visitors stay in Vermont for one month, the relationships and the understanding last much longer.

There are distinct goals for each person and for each school, as well as shared goals for outcomes from the experience. Coming to the United States gives the Europeans a chance to live in and be surrounded daily by the English language. While here, the students are immersed in Long Trail classrooms; they participate in activities and do homework as if they were enrolled at Long Trail year round. They stay with homestay families who introduce them to American culture and traditions.

Director of LTStudies International Courtney Callo loves the energy and excitement these kids bring to their time at LTS.

"It is so wonderful to see how seamlessly they blend into our community. Playing soccer, adding to discussions and presentations in classes, going on weekend trips with homestay families - they become like long-distance cousins," said Callo. "The exchange of perspectives and ideas is priceless: for all of us to learn from and with each other has such value in our day.

With today's technology we can continue to be connected long after these students leave us."

The program concludes in late September when the students return home to start their school year there.
