The recipients of the scholarship this year are Nellie Burch and her sister Lindy Burch-Durkee, who will be in 10th and 8th grade, respectively.
"Diligent students who have a strong creative streak and who travel a great distance to be at Long Trail every day, these girls were a great fit for this opportunity," stated Interim Head of School Steven Dear. "Ken and Bette especially wanted to help, in Ken's word's, local farmers' children,' and Nellie and Lindy were ideal first recipients of the scholarship, as they live and help out on a working farm."
On behalf of Long Trail, Dear expressed gratitude for the generosity of the Whalen family, who have joined the school in its mission-driven aim to assist as many area students as possible. The school's fund-raising annually equips over 60 percent of its students to attend, and the endowed scholarship in honor of Bette Whalen will be a significant help to Long Trail families.
