ARLINGTON - A group of Arlington Memorial music students have put together a Kickstarter campaign to expand their music arts programs and build a media lab where students can engage in design thinking and create original multimedia work. The Kickstarter campaign was launched earlier this month and will be available for viewing and contributing to until June 14. To view the page and see the students' video, go to www.kickstarter.com and search for "Chromatic."

The Arlington Music & Media Lab will be a center for collaboration and interdisciplinary learning. As students master new technology, they will teach the school community how to use and incorporate different forms of media into the curricula. This project will expand the use of digital media and connect Arlington students with other digital learning environments around the world.

Arlington Music and Media Teacher Phelan Gallagher spearheaded the Kickstarter campaign.

"Students have been developing original podcasts and recording their own music, and it's all been amazing to watch. However, we need more equipment to keep up with the students. Currently they are sharing one workstation, and we are hoping through this campaign to have a total of 10 workstations. With the money we raise, we will be able to buy enough computers, headphones and software so everyone can use the lab. The workstations will be outfitted with programs enabling us to create original videos, music, podcasts, and blogs as well as to better network our learning through the use of social media and web-based design platforms. Each workstation costs an estimated $1,000 to set up."
