DORSET >> On Saturday, July 23, a show of antique lawnmowers is planned to be held on church street on the town green. The event starts at 1 p.m.

Billed as a "Beauty Pageant and Parade," the event will award generous cash prizes to entries in the self-propelled and push categories. Lawnmowers must be at least 50 years old and in working condition. Residents, visitors and other viewers will vote for the winners. A local collector of antique lawnmowers will give a brief talk on how Dorset's estates cared for their lawns in earlier times.

"We expect several Locke mowers to be entered in the Pageant," said Roger Squire, president of Dorset's Chamber of Commerce. "Locke mowers are considered by some people to be 'the Rolex' of lawn equipment."

Owners will demonstrate how well their machines cut grass, and the mowers (machines and owners) will parade around the green at full throttle.

Antique lawnmower owners who are interested in entering the Beauty Pageant are required to register in advance via the Dorset Chamber website, There is a non-refundable $4.00 registration fee. The deadline for registration is July 18.

"Collectible lawn equipment may not be every spectator's cup of tea," Squire said. "But it's a good reason for visitors to discover our beautiful town, visit our shops and learn a little about Dorset's history. Bigger municipalities can host classic car events and tractor shows, but Dorset, with its small town green, well cared for homes and quiet way of life, is the perfect place for an antique lawnmower show."
