NORTH BENNINGTON >> Don't miss this opportunity for your child to join experienced pre-school teacher Misti Granger from Farmhouse Nursery School for two camps through Vermont Arts Exchange (VAE).

Two pre-school summer camps for children 3 to 5 who are also out of diapers will keep your little ones busy learning and having fun. These camps take place in the pre-school classroom at the Village School of North Bennington, which has given our program full access to their pint-sized tables, chairs, indoor play areas and the outdoor playground. Both camps will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and are $195 with a 10 percent family discount when signing up more than one family member or more than one camp.

While no stranger to early education with 12 years in the field, last year was Granger's first year heading up the pre-school camps.

"I really enjoy VAE's emphasis on creating art using recycled materials and loose parts," she said. "Using found items pushed my creativity when planning art explorations for the children." Granger's belief in the learning power of art oozes out during her camps. "Because this is an art camp," she said, "I have the time and resources to expose the children to multiple art opportunities each day. Creativity doesn't look the same for each child. I believe that given enough time to explore different art processes without the pressure of a finished product or project, young children can begin to discover what inspires them, which will hopefully lead to a life long love of art and creativity."

"Lines, Doodles and Dots" camp from July 11 to 15 is inspired by the Peter Reynolds books Ish and The Dot, The Squiggle by Carole Lexa Schaefer, and Perfect Square by Michael Hall. Campers will explore circles while making Kandinsky-ish art and squares while making Mondrian-ish art. Campers will view multiple artists' interpretations of the same subject, comparing how each artist chose to represent the subject. Each day, the children will have the opportunity to interpret a subject in their own way, making an "ish" picture. They will be supplied with a variety of materials and mediums to create their art in any way that inspires them.

Campers in our "Exploring Art with the Five Senses" camp from July 18 to 22 will explore their own senses as they visit multiple stations where they can create musical instruments, paint with textured paints and on textured surfaces, use scented paints, make edible art, and explore the sense of sight through color, shades, shadows and attempting "blind" art.

All camp registration and payment is now completed online. A $50 drop-in fee per day where space is available is an option. Call VAE for drop-in availability. For detailed descriptions of all the 2016 VAE Summer Camp programs and to register and pay, visit or call 802-442-5549.
