MANCHESTER >> Two May bird surveys at Hildene, the Lincoln Family Home in Manchester, will be held Saturday, May 14 and May 28 gathering at 7 a.m at the Welcome Center. A ruby-throated hummingbird was seen in East Dorset on May 1. The biggest influx of migrants happens during the first two weeks in May. It's also when seeing and hearing birds will result in the highest daily tally for the Hildene walks. If it's too hard to find a bird with binoculars, there are always great spring wildflowers which will be in full bloom and don't move.
The free monthly bird walks are conducted as a collaborative event by the Vermont Bird Place & Skywatch and Hildene. They are open to all who enjoy birds, nature and the outdoors. Binoculars are available to borrow. Once the results of every birding day are reported to the international database, e-bird, information is available worldwide on the presence of birds, their abundance and the changes in migration patterns and populations.
