ARLINGTON >> Chapel on the Green (West Arlington United Methodist Church) is happy to announce the appointment of a new pastor, the Reverend Doctor Thomas (Tom) Atkins.
Atkins is a bi-vocational pastor who has spent much of his life as a designer and manager in the broadcast technology world. He has founded and managed two companies, and one major division of a company. He earned his BA in English (with minors in drama, history and communications) from Virginia Tech, a Creative Writing MA from Hollins University, and his Doctorate of Divinity from Christian Bible College and Seminary.
Born and raised in the Methodist church, Atkins has also spent many years worshiping and serving in both the Baptist and Presbyterian traditions. In 2014, he began the training required to become a licensed local pastor in the United Methodist Church, finishing that work in the spring of 2015. He also currently serves another congregation, Rupert United Methodist Church, in Rupert, Vermont.
Besides his work as a pastor, Atkins currently runs a consulting and coaching company, Quarry House, with clients worldwide. He is an artist, published poet and writer, and professional photographer.
"I think my years in the so-called 'real world' have brought me to a place in ministry that I could not have come to without years in the workforce, raising a family and seeing the value of faith in day to day life," said Atkins. "I believe the church has lost some of the joy our faith was meant to bring us, that sense of being loved and cared about. That joy is where I focus my ministry today, and I believe the Methodist motto of 'Open Hearts. Open Minds. Open Doors'" is the perfect platform for living out our faith in the modern world.
Chapel on the Green (West Arlington United Methodist Church) is one of the oldest churches in Southern Vermont. Built in 1804 as a non-denominational church, it became part of the Methodist Church in 1850, and has remained in the Methodist to the present day.
Chapel on the Green, with it's historic decor and rural setting near the Norman Rockwell house in West Arlington is a popular church for weddings. Currently they meet once a month, Sunday nights at 6 PM, on the last Sunday of the month, as well as on Easter. February 28th will be Atkins' first service at the Chapel.
