ARLINGTON >> Four Arlington Memorial High School students were selected to attend the Vermont Student-Athlete Leadership Conference in Burlington. AMHS Juniors Jared Lacoste and Riley Lane and Sophomores Bailey Cross and Gracie Smith participated in the two-day conference with more than 250 other students from 46 high schools across the state.
The conference brought together student-athletes and high school athletic staff to discuss effective leadership. Students attended four training sessions on decision-making, team-building, leadership challenges and bullying and hazing. Noted Leadership Trainer William Harris and Teen Power Author Ed Gerety were the keynote speakers. Harris' remarks focused on "leading with respect" and Gerety discussed the "principles and skills essential to being a leader."
Each of the AMHS students chosen to attend the leadership conference is a multi-sport athlete. All four are members of the Arlington varsity soccer and basketball teams; Lacoste and Lane were both co-captains of their respective soccer teams this past season. In addition, Cross and Lacoste play AMHS baseball and golf and are teammates on the Arlington Club Soccer team; Lane runs track and plays softball for AMHS; and Smith is a member of the AMHS golf team and has competed with both the Bennington Marauders and Manchester Tritons swim teams.
Arlington Athletic Director Ashley Hoyt served as a conference facilitator. "The conference was a great opportunity for our students to meet other students and learn about leadership issues in high school sports. The speakers were powerful, and they really energized the crowd. Jared, Riley, Bailey and Gracie did a great job of asking questions and joining in the discussions. They represented our school well."
