MANCHESTER - The 22nd Annual Komen Vermont Race for the Cure - which helps raise funds for breast cancer education, training and screening in Vermont and New Hampshire - will be held on Saturday, Sept. 20, at the Hildene Meadows in Manchester.

Now is the time to form a race team or join a team that already exists. Historically, teams are the race's greatest fundraising generators. A team captain forms the team and once the team is registered online, other participants may join. Members need not necessarily participate in the same event; they may walk or run in the 5K run and walk or run in the 10K race. Even Virtual Runners, those who can't make it to the Race but still want to take part, can form or join teams.

One such team-forming individual is Liz Frederick, who has captained "Team ORVIS" for 13 years.

"I am a captain," said Frederick, "Because I believe strongly in the support that the Komen Vermont Race for the Cure gives to survivors and the community. I form a team to help educate Orvis employees about what the Race for the Cure is doing locally and how much they [Orvis employees] can help just by signing up for the walk, a run, making donations, or volunteering."

There is no additional fee to form a team. It's $35 for timed runners and walkers, $30 for untimed and Virtual Runners and $15 for children under 12-years-old. Seventy-five percent of all monies raised at the race underwrites breast cancer education, screening and treatment programs in Vermont and New Hampshire.

This past year, $350,000 was granted to 11 organizations in the two states. The remaining 25 percent of the money raised is dedicated to breast cancer research.
