Drawn from his new book, "Hospitality and Treachery in Western Literature," James Heffernan re-examines two famous 19th century English novels. By showing what hosts and guests do to, as well as for each other in these novels, he aims to shed light on what they can tell us about property, possession, and power.
James Heffernan is Professor of English Emeritus at Dartmouth College since 2004. He is the founding editor of Review 19, an online review of books on 19th century English and American literature. He is the author of several books including the recently released, "Hospitality and Treachery in Western Literature," Yale University Press, 2014, which is available for purchase at Northshire Bookstore in Manchester.
