"Our home provides happiness, security, and the stability to realize our dreams for the future." said Shum on what the home means to her and her family.
Habitat has already begun building two more homes on Jennifer Lane, one for and with Russ and Lyn Van Vleck and their two children, and one for and with Janet Benson, Pat & Tony Evans (Janet's parents) and Janet's son. Volunteers of all skill levels are invited to help Habitat for Humanity build on Wednesday or Saturday between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. All tools and materials are supplied.
The construction schedule for each week is on the home page of the website, www.benningtonareahabitat.com.
Habitat is currently accepting applications for two more homes that the affiliate plans to build in 2015, one on Jennifer Lane in Manchester, and another on Swallow Hill Road in Pownal. People interested in applying should call 802-367-1000.
The Bennington Area Habitat affiliate completed its first home in 1999 and since then has completed one whole-house renovation and fifteen new homes.
Habitat homes are affordable because over 3,000 hours of volunteer labor are typically contributed during 60 plus days of construction for each home. In addition, Habitat finances the home with a no-interest mortgage.
The Bennington Area affiliate is one of 1,500 American affiliates and part of a worldwide organization that in the fall of 2013, celebrated helping its 800,000th family, now housing over two million people. Each local affiliate is responsible for securing all funds, volunteers, services and materials to support its activities. Bennington Area Habitat tithes 10 percent of all unrestricted donations, as well as 10 percent of the proceeds from the Shires ReSale Store, to Habitat International and has paid for 15.6 homes overseas.
Habitat is a perfect example of what it means to think globally and act locally. Habitat welcomes involvement at the build site, with the Shires ReSale Store, and/or with committees that support the work of BAHfH. People interested in learning more, should contact the Habitat office at 802-367-1000.
