DORSET -The Dorset Players will present their spring musical "She Loves Me" with show dates May 15, 16 and 17, 22, 23 and 24 at 7:30 p.m. and matinees Sundays May 18 and 25 at 2 p.m. at the Dorset Playhouse, located at 104 Cheney Road in Dorset.

This musical is based on the 1936 Hungarian play "Parfumerie" and has the humble distinction of living in the shadow of the more famous movies (and Broadway musical) that it inspired. Hollywood has cashed in on the play "Parfumerie" not once but three times. The first adaptation was the 1940 romantic comedy "The Shop Around the Corner," starring James Stewart and Margaret Sullavan. That was followed by the 1949 screen musical version "In the Good Old Summertime" starring Judy Garland and Van Johnson, and then much later by the 1998 movie "You've Got Mail," with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.

"She Loves Me," featuring music by Jerry Bock and lyrics by Sheldon Harnick (Fiddler on the Roof) and book by Joe Masteroff (Caberet), revolves around shop employees Georg Nowak and Amalia Balash who, despite being consistently at odds with each other at work, are unaware that each is the other's secret pen pal met through lonely-hearts ads.

Local favorites Vanessa Beattie, Richard Grip, and Shannon Thompson along with newcomer to the Dorset Stage, Mike McCord, will entertain with their voices, expressions and most of all pure talent.

Directed by Jeff Linebeck with music direction by Richard Cherry, the cast of almost 20 have been working since January to bring an evening of music, comedy and great entertainment.

The show is accentuated with smart and lively banter and a score that provides a constant supply of cleverly worded and memorable songs. "She Loves Me" is a feel-good musical that works its magic in 2014 as well as Laszlo's play did in the 1930s.
