First celebrating National Poetry Month, the exhibit, "First Frost" is a series of collages reflecting on the poetry of Robert Frost, who lived in South Shaftsbury from 1920-29, and is buried in Bennington. Taking "frost" as its inspiration, the exhibit explores the period between the first frosts of autumn and the last remnants of snow and ice lingering into the spring. The exhibit represents a meditation on the changing colors and textures of the seasons set against the backdrop of Robert Frost's poems. The collages draw on studies of rural landscapes in upstate New York and southern Vermont, combining texts with mixed media, ranging from wood scraps and old almanacs to recycled textiles and antique buttons. The exhibit will run from April 4 -28. The opening reception is Saturday, April 6 from 3-5 p.m.
The second event will be an artist's talk, "Frost to Frost: Poetry and Collage in Dialogue" at 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 20 which discusses both Frost's poetry and how to create collages. Both events are free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served. A portion of all art sales benefits the Martha Canfield Library.
