DORSET - Long Trail School's tenth grade class has already learned quite a bit about the German students who are coming to visit them in February. The American and German students have been connecting with each other via a shared Facebook page. Using social media to do what previous generations did via pen pal letters, these students will already have developed friendships before the Vermont students welcome the Germans into their homes.

The German students will be at Long Trail from Feb. 8 to the 28. Coming from Freie Schule Anne-Sophie in Kuenzelsau, Germany, the group will be attending classes alongside their peers. They will be teaching Long Trail students as well as learning with them. During their stay, the German students will have Vermont-related outings around the area and the state.

In a specially scheduled class, the American students are preparing twice a week for hosting and for their own trip to Germany in April. The trip is already bonding this sophomore class as they enthusiastically learn about German culture and vocabulary in preparation for their travels. They are preparing presentations to take with them to be shared as part of their exchange. Topics such as Vermont lifestyle, wind and solar power in Vermont, the marble and slate industries including local quarries, and tourism will be highlighted by small groups. While in Germany, the Long Trail students will visit Stuttgart, Nuremberg, and other great cultural places.
