Rutins to discuss education in totalitarian states
BENNINGTON — Arlington business owner Karlis Rutins, will discuss the role of education in totalitarian states at this month's Bennington County Campaign for Liberty meeting Dec. 17 at 6:30 p.m. in the Banknorth room of the Bennington Free Library.
Rutins was born and grew up in the Soviet satellite state of Latvia. His childhood experiences within the state-run school system are enlighteing and informative for those who interested in the influence of education on societies, both free and unfree.

Raffle to Benefit M. Keyes, Salem/Shushan Fuel Fund
SALEM, N.Y. — The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce will raffle a giant teddy bear this holiday season. Tickets are $1 and all proceeds will benefit the Mike Keyes, Salem/Shushan Fuel Fund which helps families who need help with heating costs. Tickets can be purchased at Glens Falls National Bank, Jackson Traders, Trip's of Shushan, Laura's Garden and other local businesses. The drawing takes place Friday, Dec. 18.

Hildene Bird Survey the final for the 2009 season
MANCHESTER VILLAGE — The last bird survey for the 2009 season at Hildene-the Lincoln Family Home will be Saturday, Dec. 19. This promises to be a day of Blue Jays, Black-capped Chickadees and American Crows and other surprises combined with a good dose of fresh air and camaraderie. Meet at the Hildene Visitor Center at 8 a.m.

Battenkill Grange to host Pancake Breakfast
ARLINGTON — Battenkill Grange #487, will serve a Pancake Breakfast on Sunday, Dec. 20, at the Grange on on Route 313, west of the covered bridge in Arlingtoon. The menu will include pancakes, saussage, Vermont maple syrup, biscuits, sausage gravy, home fries, coffee, juice and milk. Price is $6 for adults and $3 for children under 12.

DUO annual Holiday Bazaar
ARLINGTON — The DUO (Do Unto Others) community service student group at Arlington Memorial High School will host its annual Holiday Bazaar, Monday, Dec. 21, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Special parent/adult shopping hours are from 3 to 6 p.m. This event is open to the community. Business meeting at First Baptist church next Sunday
MANCHESTER — There will be a special meeting of members of the First Baptist Church on Dec. 27, following morning worship to: be informed of the action of the Prudential Committee with respect to the granting of easements to the Town of Manchester for the construction of the roundabout; and to authorize the use of funds received from the Town of Manchester.
