After earning an honorable mention in last year's PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest, this year Harry won his grade bracket in the contest held by Vermont Public Television.
His Aesopian winning story, "How Marzier the Moose Got His Antlers," involves a moose named Marzier and a crocodile named Calvin and is available in full crayon color online at www.vpt.org/writers.
"He comes up with great ideas for stories," said Harry's mother, Rebecca Kim. She said her son, a second grader at Manchester Elementary Middle School, had been drawing and writing since he was 3.
A possible future career? Kim said Harry would "definitely" find himself in some creative or imaginative pursuit, or else helping people. "Whatever he does he does his best at," she said.
In the running in national contest
There were 172 entries submitted to the local Public Broadcasting Service member station this year. Chuck Pizer, VPT's community engagement director, called the contest a "signature event for us for 18 years, and we're so happy to challenge the kids to do their best."
The winners will be featured on-air and online reading their stories, according to Ann Curran, communications director for VPT.
Curran said the contest winners' segments would air later this month in between children's programming.
Each grade-winning entry from kindergarten through third grade will now go on to the national PBS contest where the winners will be announced this summer. Curran said the nationwide contest winner was selected from Vermont most recently in 2010.
Kim said Harry and his two siblings would be attending a celebration for the contest winners next week at VPT studios in Colchester. She said her son heard about the contest from his teacher last year. "It's a great program."
All entrants are invited to read their work at story times held around the state.
Notably, two third-grade twins from Orwell both earned honorable mentions for the second year in a row.
The contest is sponsored by Comcast and General Dynamics' Employee Community Action Council. Community partners in the project include the Bennington Free Library.
