PERU — The Manchester Ranger District of the Green Mountain National Forest, in partnership with Trout Unlimited, is hosting its 19th Annual Youth Fishing Derby at Hapgood Pond Campground in Peru on Saturday, June 13. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m., with fishing from 9 to 11 a.m. for area youth, aged 12 and under, accompanied by an adult. The festivities will continue until about noon. The derby will be held rain or shine. The youth fishing day is being held in conjunction with National Fishing Week. That same Saturday is Free Fishing Day in Vermont.

Contests will be held for longest fish and most fish caught by age group. A visit from Smokey Bear is anticipated along with various demonstrations and displays. This year, there may be guests from Vermont Institute of Natural Science (VINS) and the Vermont Bird Place.

Donations and volunteer help will be provided by many members of the community. Questions may be directed to the Manchester Ranger Station at 362-2307.
