FAIRLEE — Daniel French, Superintendent of the Bennington-Rutland Supervisory Union, has been selected as the Vermont Superintendent of the Year for 2009 by the Vermont Superintendents Association. French was presented with the Frederick H. Tuttle Superintendent of the Year Award on May 14 at a meeting of the Association at Lake Morey Resort in Fairlee.
French was honored with the award for his educational leadership at the local and state levels. He has inspired his colleagues to integrate technology into school district operations and student instruction.
"Dan is constantly advocating for educators to re-think assumptions regarding the possibilities that exist to use technology to bring Vermont classrooms into the 21st century," said VSA president John Everitt. "He has a vision that our students and teachers can utilize new tools to engage young minds and heighten their learning."
The Frederick H. Tuttle Service Award is given annually to a superintendent who makes outstanding contributions to educational leadership at the local, regional and state levels and is committed to public education for the children of Vermont.
In accepting the award, French thanked his mentors and staff at the Bennington-Rutland Supervisory Union. He also encouraged more superintendents to become involved in the statewide conversation on the future of public education in Vermont, saying, "We need to open this discourse
Before serving in Bennington-Rutland, French served as principal of Canaan Schools in the Northeast Kingdom where he expanded student learning opportunities through innovative use of distance learning technologies. He currently serves as the secretary of the VSA Trustees and chair of the VSA technology task force.
