July 7, 2000 - This week in Manchester, the Village was set to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the chartering of Manchester Village. Also during this week, Harry Potter mania hit Manchester as the fourth book, "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire," was set to be released at the Northshire Bookstore at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, July 8. Northshire's children's book buyer Jessica Wood said she had to sign an affadavit promising that she would not open the box of books before July 8 to secure a shipment of them.

40 Years Ago

July 6, 1972 - This week, the Manchester Selectboard met for the first time to decide what to do with the 77 acres of the Old Fairgrounds that had been donated by the Manchester Rod and Gun Club.

The town appointed a recreation committee and began the process of turning the area into the Rec Park that we know today. Also in this week's Journal, a discussion about the problems with postal cutbacks, the Village electing new officer and photo of Dorset's July 4th fireworks.

75 Years Ago

July 3, 1947 - In this week's paper, the Journal was filled with community news. The Manchester Rotary Club celebrated their 10th anniversary, a local Manchester girl, Fern Willey, graduated at the top of her class from Kurn Hattin Homes, and the Mark Skinner Library celebrated its 50th anniversary on July 7.
