SOUTH LONDONDERRY - "Two Artists Look at Flowers," an exhibit of current work by local painters Helen Young and Nancy Tips, will be on view at the South Londonderry Free Library during December and January. Both artists work in oils in a direct and intuitive style. Their delight in glorious color and dynamic brush work is obvious in this exhibit of small flower paintings that highlights both the differences and the similarities in their visions.

Helen Young, born in Siberia to Ukranian parents, lives and works in Landgrove where she has made an intimate exploration of varying light conditions over a number of years. Known primarily for her plein air landscapes in which sparkling brooks cascade over lively rock faces, she has also deployed her vigorous brush work and love of color in the service of flowers. The small paintings in this exhibit represent a less frequently seen aspect of Helen's work, and reward careful viewing.

Nancy Tips lives and works in Windham, developing the techniques and practices of Philadelphia atmospheric realists with whom she has studied.

While she is primarily known for her chiaroscuro still-lifes in which subjects emerge from mysterious shadows, she found that the riot of last summer's flowers seemed to demand a more light-filled space. The result is a small group of paintings in which flowers seem to shimmer against a brilliant wall.

presenting a feast for the eyes during our two darkest months. All paintings in the exhibit are for sale, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the South Londonderry Free Library. Library hours are: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1-5 p.m.; Wednesdays 7-9 p.m.; Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. For directions, call the library at 802-824-3371.
