Rebecca Raymond will be exhibiting at the Dorset Library next month.

DORSET >> The featured artist at the Dorset Public Library during the month of May will be Rebecca Raymond. The public is invited to meet her at the opening reception on Saturday, May 7 from 11-1 p.m. Refreshments will be served. All works are for sale, with a portion of the proceeds going to benefit the library.

A watercolorist, she developed a love for this medium after many years of training as a visual artist. The versatility and spontaneity of the watercolor medium are reflective of her artistic style and character. "Creating in watercolor is like a controlled accident," according to her. "You never really know how the pigments are going to react to water on paper. One has to be flexible and learn to work with whatever happens. Working through these perplexities is what makes watercolors the most exciting medium."

Raymond has been the visual arts teacher for the Manchester elementary Middle School for 25 years. A native of Massachusetts, she helped develop the Art PARTnership Program at the Worcester Art Museum. Her artistic training began at Framingham State College where she received a bachelor's degree in fine Arts. She received her master's degree from Anna Maria College and Art New England at Bennington College, where she worked closely with the well-known watercolorist Patricia Forrester. She has also trained with Salton Szabo at Southern Vermont Arts Center.

The collection of paintings exhibited are works directly from nature which capture intimate vantage points of subjects in their natural settings. Creating the luminous effects of light and its relationship to color, her floral impressions appear as though the light is shining through them instead of on them. The atmosphere of each painting creates a luminosity of light and color. The vibrancy of her landscapes leaves viewers spellbound.

The library's hours are Monday-Friday 11-5 p.m. and Saturday from 10-3 p.m. Call 802-867-5774 for more information.
